Welcome to HolisticHospitalDesign.com!

On this site you will find research data on Holistic Hospital Design and the case project: a new Masterplan for the Dessie Referral Hospital.

In the vision of Holistic Hospital Design a design for a health institution will not just be a functional building but will also be a healing environment with a holistic approach. Not only the physical and mental well being of patients, staff and visitors is important, as in 'normal' healing environments, but the total of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects influence the wellbeing of persons. The stress reduction can result in use of less medicine, shorter and nicer stay, improvement of care/cure and less staff absence through inllness.

The Dessie Referral Hospital is a public hospital which provides health care to a catchment area of 7 million people with various ethnical and religious backgrounds. The Hospital is located in the city Dessie, 2600 meters high, in the northern highlands of the Federal Democratic Republic Ethiopia.

Because of the degenerated state of the physical infrastructure a new masterplan for the Dessie Referral Hospital is to be designed. Daniël de Witte from the Netherlands is involved in the research concerning Holistic Hospital Design and the designing of the masterplan.
